The beauty of imperfection

Reflections on our self-image

Although we have actually become more beautiful over the past 50 years — we have nicer skin and teeth, for example — research shows that we are increasingly dissatisfied with our appearance. In a culture where manipulated images are the norm, our self-image is under great pressure. We scroll past perfect bodies and lives across our screens, and, as a consequence, our own existence often does not seem so perfect at all. Woertman investigated what these images do to the way we experience our own bodies. According to her, beauty comes not from transparency, but from relationships and connections. Combining psychology with examples from everyday life, Woertman argues passionately that you should always look for meaning in life, stop striving for an idealised self-image and flawless appearance, and regard people as complete with all their imperfections.
