Suzie loves birds and often goes to the swamp near her house to watch them. One winter day she is skating when she falls through the ice. To her surprise, she is rescued by Brady, a talking bittern. This makes her think of her demented grandmother’s stories about the Mouthy Swamp. She stumbles upon an ancient legend that seems to have something to do with the lonely Brady. Meanwhile, she tries to get the grumbling bittern a girlfriend and helps him to open his eyes to the world and birds around him.
