Dirk Wanrooij was born in the Yemeni capital Sana’a and grew up in a village in the Dutch region of Twente and in Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan. He studied Dutch, History and Arabic at the University of Amsterdam. Between 2009 and 2016, Dirk lived in Cairo, where he worked as a teacher, a bicycle dealer and as a freelance journalist. In 2015, he published his first book Riot, which was nominated for the Brusse Prize for the best Dutch-language journalism book. The House in the Clouds has been nominated for the Amarte Prize.
