Many people are doing all kinds of things to combat climate change. They design brilliant green inventions and adopt small environmentally conscious every day habits that have a large impact on the Earth. Did you know that certain animals are the real climate heroes? Whales, for example, store huge amounts of CO2, grazing muskoxen keep the Arctic cooler, and tapirs plant new trees just by pooping. So it is about time we shine a spotlight on these animals and the clever ways in which they help the climate!

This is what I am. I’m an only child. That means I’m special. One of a kind! I don’t have any brothers or sisters. I don’t know if that’s a bad thing. I’ve never known any different.

Sara Paletti lives on the thirteenth floor of a block of flats that will soon be demolished. Her father works in a cheese croquette factory and drives a car with a large croquette on the roof. Her mother is an inventor, and doesn’t have much time for anything else. Sara keeps coming up with plans to make life in the flat more fun, unfortunately not always with success. Then she meets Alfie, the boy in the dress. In Sara’s life, everything is okay, and sometimes it isn’t – but that’s okay too. Or, as she says herself: ‘Everything’s Paletti!’

The last holiday of a happily divorced family

In Elephant Paths, a happily divorced family rents a villa on the southern French coast once a year to recreate life before the divorce. Every family member thinks they are doing it for another family member, but only Professor Raad knows he is doing it for himself. Every summer, those few days on the southern French coast are among the happiest days of his year. Meet Rachel, Raad’s ex-wife, who has promised her new husband that this is the last time she will go on holiday with her former family. Meet their children, Sara and Gabriel, whose futures seem to come easily to them. And follow the single life of Grant, Rachel’s mother, who eats kibbles with a poncho on to avoid getting her neat summer clothes covered in grease stains.

Elephant Paths is a tragicomic novel about a family that clings to old and tried happiness against its better judgment, even though the cracks in the firmament are clearly visible.

What makes you who you are: your past or your memories of it?

When his father dies and memories drive him back to his childhood, Mart Rebius becomes convinced that he has forgotten something essential about his past. Obsessed by visions and half-memories, he decides to reconstruct his past. He buys his childhood home, hires actors as his family and has them reenact the afternoon of his sixth birthday. Something important happened at that party, he believes. Something that will give him access to a part of his life that has hitherto been inaccessible. Soon enigmatic events follow in rapid succession and Mart starts to doubt his memories. Did he make it all up?

This Is Your Time, Bertram Koeleman’s new novel, is an intense exploration of a life and an exciting novel about the intertwining of identity and memory. Are we the product of our past, or are we the product of what we remember?
